Increasing Space Utilization Efficiencies

McMillan Pazdan Smith announces the addition of experienced architect, David R. Moore II, to the firm. David, who has been involved in the design of over 30 libraries in the Southeast, represents 23 years of library and civic design experience. He has authored numerous master plan and feasibility studies identifying strategies to increase efficiency, functionality and capacity, often without the need for new construction. Economic pressures on institutional funding sources have resulted in the need for optimum space utilization strategies as programmatic needs and utilization rates increase.

One recent success story is a study for the R.M. Cooper Library at Clemson University in which David, prior to his arrival, demonstrated how areas, departments and furnishings could be shifted within the existing footprint to achieve stated objectives. The results included:

  • 29% increase in student seating
  • 170% increase in study rooms
  • 34% increase in desktop computers
  • 13% increase in study tables
  • 134% increase in study carrels

As a recognized speaker and lecturer on issues relating to library programming, design, construction and sustainability, David has presented at Public Library Association conferences in Portland, Boston and Seattle and has spoken at SCLA, SELA, NCLA and COMO conferences throughout the Southeast.

“David Moore’s insightfulness reduces the amount of time it takes to articulate our needs. He quickly comes up with terrific solutions.  The master plan study he developed for our library helped us think outside the box and exceeded what we thought was possible.?”
– David Evans, Director of Horace W. Sturgis Library, Kennesaw State University
