The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation recently presented the 2014 Preservation Honor Award to McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and Spartanburg Community College for the renovation of the Evans Academic Center on the Spartanburg Community College Downtown Campus. The building is a three-story structure of approximately 104,000 SF, originally constructed in 1921 as a high school, with additions in 1924 and 1928 — then renovated and converted into county government offices in 1979.

The award-winning renovation project rebuilt most of the interior and modernized the building to provide state-of-the-art classrooms and labs better suited to the larger scale, maximum flexibility and technologies sought for today’s more open, group interactive learning environments. Historic Preservation Architect, Donald Love, (pictured: third from left) led the restoration efforts to repair or replicate many architectural elements, materials, and finishes to restore the historic fabric and character of the building. McMillan Pazdan Smith led the project from feasibility study through final design, completing the new center in time for fall classes last August.

The Preservation Honor Award was presented by Governor Nikki R. Haley at a State House ceremony in Columbia, South Carolina on June 11. Sponsored by the Palmetto Trust, the S.C. Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor, the awards recognize exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation of South Carolina’s architectural and cultural heritage.
