Abner Creek and Lyman Elementary Schools, Spartanburg School District 5
A new 92,000 SF school for kindergarten through fourth grade was designed as a prototype for Spartanburg School District Five, saving time to meet the demands of a growing district. The design provides separate wings for each grade and centralized core spaces in a very compact floor plan. Wings are expandable and core areas can be open for community use while the remainder is locked.
The exterior design is distinctly different than its mirror image in the district, with a curvilinear front façade, vaulted main entrance ceiling, and brick architectural detailing. The cafetorium, media center, and gymnasium are distinctive group spaces that repeat the vaulted ceiling element and provide cheerful, open, and well-lit spaces, appealing to an elementary age group. Cost-saving geothermal wells provide heating and cooling.
