Ashley Ridge High School, Dorchester County School District 2
Incorporating the rich architectural elements of historic downtown Summerville, SC was a key factor for the design team on the new Ashley Ridge High School. Sized for 1,500 students, the core accommodates up to 1,800 for this rapidly growing district. The educational spaces employ the latest technology and special features to encourage exploration of interest and interaction between students and educators. Digital projection equipment and cameras, smart boards, and wireless technology are standard throughout the building. The cafeteria includes an exterior dining and lounging terrace, and the building incorporates daylighting and exterior views throughout.
Special interest areas are well-defined programmed spaces, including the athletic wing with gymnasium, locker, and training rooms. A fine arts wing includes band and separate practice rooms to support drama, choral, and dance along with a 2D and 3D art space featuring a kiln and dark room. Computer, science, and home economic laboratories with cooking stations further support the academic curriculum.
Also designed on the 85-acre site is an easily accessed athletic facility with a 5,000-seat stadium and separate venues for track and field, tennis, softball, baseball, and practice fields for sports and the marching band.
