Augusta Municipal Building
The 1957 Municipal Building faithfully served its citizens for many decades — but built prior to current building codes and more advanced technology used today, it needed extensive modernization. After reviewing current conditions and future needs, a complete renovation and rebuilding of the existing building was required. The main entry for the building was relocated to the new addition with a two-story atrium that incorporates multi-function public spaces and security systems. LEED components are used throughout the building where applicable, and existing marble paneling was re-used in new spaces. A nine-story addition was also constructed housing new high-speed elevators.
The interior spaces were reconfigured for the 18 City departments housed in the building. Each space received completely new systems infrastructure and elements of current sustainable design trends. A new Commission Chamber was created with seating for over 200 citizens and extensive audio / visual / lighting capabilities. The improved 144,180 square-foot Municipal Building should serve the citizens of the CSRA for the next half century or more.
