The Brunswick Library has served residents of Glynn County, GA from its current 40,000 SF facility since 1975. Although renovated in parts during the following deacdes, the last update had been in 2003. In order to stay relevant and provide enhanced public services to 21st-century users, the library engaged McMillan Pazdan Smith in 2017 to design a complete renovation of the facility’s interior.
While the renovation showcases much of the library’s original architecture, such as the exposed waffle slab structure, it also improves the user experience for both the community and staff alike. The refreshed furniture, fixtures, and equipment feature a palette reflective of Brunswick’s port and industrial history, as well as the surrounding natural environment.
Some of the significant programmatic changes include lower shelving units that allow more light in through existing large windows, new group study rooms, staff workrooms, and a laptop bar. By reconfiguring the front entrance, the design team was able to create a new 5,300 SF multipurpose room that will accommodate up to 400 seats and can be sectioned into smaller spaces as needed. Other improvements include a relocated circulation desk, new public restrooms, a new mechanical system, and a catering kitchen to improve food service capabilities.
Construction began August of 2018, and the library remained open and operational throughout the construction. The facility was completed in August of 2019.
