Christ Church Episcopal School, Performing Arts Center

Christ Church Episcopal School added a new Performing Arts Center to create a “home base” for their arts programs. The building is 40,700 SF and includes a 600-seat proscenium theatre with scene shop and dressing facilities. Other spaces included classrooms, practice rooms and a large lobby for pre-show functions.

Acoustics played a major part in the design of the theatre space. Angled wood paneling and a variable acoustic drapery system overhead made the space customizable for the performance. Great care was taken to acoustically separate all practice rooms including separating structural steel, concrete slab, and using acoustical wall designs.

“I have learned through this process that an architect has many things to balance: the needs of the faculty, the concerns of the financial people, the vision of the space, needs of various committees, and on and on. Cary has done a terrific job of giving each of these factors their due time and attention.”
