Clemson University, Indoor Track Facility
Awarded: Metal Architecture Design Award, Honorable Mention, 2005
As the host for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s annual indoor track championship, Clemson University chose to enhance the experience with a new facility. The pre-engineered structure has one of the largest footprints on campus, yet close attention to the building’s scale and exterior design gives the large volume space a pleasing appearance. The use of brick, broken roof planes and translucent panels for daylighting give the feeling of a smaller building and a facility that fits well into the Clemson campus vernacular. The synthetic track surface is applied over concrete. Restrooms, concessions, and lobby can be closed off from the Indoor Track, providing secure access to support outdoor track meets and weekend football games.
