Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)

The new facility for Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Carolina Campus was designed as a satellite of the original Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA and is a four-year postgraduate medical school serving the Southeast region. Situated on an 18.7-acre site in Spartanburg, SC, the master plan included extensive landscaping and careful placement of the new three-story, 74,000 SF structure. The main building is located on the former site of a 19th-century textile mill and includes an elevated outdoor plaza with the original mill smokestack. Programmatic spaces included technology enhanced classrooms, two 220-person lecture halls, an anatomy lab, mock exam rooms, osteopathic training rooms, several SIM labs, faculty and administrative offices, and associated support spaces.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) training rooms feature one master training room with video camera pointed on the instructor to live feed directly into the other training rooms. Simulation labs included patient “Smart Dummies” for hospital room simulations complete with computer control rooms to allow manipulation of the patient simulator, plus multiple video cameras to record training sessions.

Even with client addition to the scope, the school opened on-time for the Fall semester.
