Elon University, Alumni Field House
Elon University relied on McMillan Pazdan Smith’s extensive experience with football facilities and understanding of college and university campuses when it came time to make permanent improvements to their football stadium. Ron Smith, one of the firm’s Managing Principals who played both collegiate and professional football, brought a practical understanding of the functional requirements to football related facilities. Led by Ron, the team designed a new 34,000 SF field house that anchors the stadium’s north end zone. Designed to complement the university’s traditional architectural aesthetic, the field house blends with the existing campus architecture and is configured to create two sloping processional walkways that provide pre-game gathering space for athletes entering the field. In addition to housing the traditional fieldhouse components such as locker rooms, exam rooms, a training room, equipment room, and offices for the trainer, the new structure also contains student study areas and informal meeting spaces. The training room includes hot and cold tubs, extremity tubs, taping stations, a rehabilitation area, and a large strength and conditioning weight room.
