Furman University, Daniel Dining Hall

Creating a variety of dining options for an evolving student body was the catalyst for the renovation of the existing 1950’s dining hall at Furman University. The addition of an Einstein Bagel Shop, computers, flat screen television, a fireplace, and comfortable seating have re-energized and transformed the dining hall into a favorite hangout location. Warm interior finishes, including a sunburst ceiling design, complement the space. In addition to open seating, the plan provides two, 45-seat private dining rooms for faculty and trustees, one of which has an A/V system for presentations.

Phasing the design and construction for the least amount of food service interruption proved challenging but was accomplished through excellent teamwork. The Design-Build delivery system allowed the building interior to be demolished and rebuilt within a critical three-month construction schedule from early May to mid-August. Most of the materials and systems used provided sustainable characteristics in keeping with the university’s environmentally conscious construction policies.
