Greenwood Genetic Center, SC Biotechnology Incubation Facility
The South Carolina Biotechnology Incubation Facility is a 22,000 SF wing of the J.C. Self Research Institute building on the Greenwood Genetic Center campus. The institute serves as the central, academic Incubation Program with the collaboration of the State’s three research universities — Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina.
The three-story structure contains six laboratory modules and related office and support space, the research library and a 120-seat auditorium and conference center. Extensive research provided lab facilities designed specifically for the use of biotechnology scientists. The incubation facility is available to start-up companies for defined periods of time, and projects that prove to be economically viable will spin-off into separate operations in the surrounding Biotechnology Park and other South Carolina locations. The design challenge included consideration of the connection to an existing facility. Care was given to use similar windows and materials, yet provide a fresh identity and inviting entrance.
