Mid Carolina High School, School District of Newberry County
A new two-story high school design minimizes the building footprint on a nine-acre site for the School District of Newberry County. Red brick, stone accents, and Art Deco detailing are reminiscent of the early 20th Century Modernist movement and provide a timeless design for the historic community. The efficient and compact design provides two main classroom wings flanking a central courtyard, providing interactive social and instructional spaces for 800 students. The Ninth Grade Academy is separated to one floor to provide transitional space for the maturing teen. The school provides ample daylighting, including a monumental stairwell with floor to ceiling windows.
Athletic facilities for Mid Carolina High School include a 1500-seat gymnasium to host high school league tournaments along with weight and training rooms, coaches’ offices, a wrestling room, physical education locker rooms, and classrooms. Core spaces such as the media center and cafeteria are planned to accommodate an additional 400 students should future growth require an additional classroom wing.
