MUSC Health West Campus, Medical Pavilion

MUSC Health West Campus is located where a JCPenney department store once stood. As part of MUSC Health’s goal to make healthcare more convenient by expanding to new locations, renovating an empty department store in an aging shopping mall was a perfect choice. The location capitalizes on its close proximity to patients and staff and plenty of existing parking.

Transforming Retail into Modern Healthcare

Making use of available daylight due to the size and shape of the building was a challenge. We strategically designed new openings along the exterior as well as celebrated the existing clerestory volume located in the middle of the space. The developed “concourse” provides wayfinding and shared daylight while also connecting the space back to the mall. To address the changing care model and patient experience, a centralized check-in and self-check-in kiosks are available.

MUSC Health West Campus houses 48 exam rooms and 7- 12 room exam pods, with future expansion to add 2-3 additional pods. The exam pod can be shared with 3-4 providers, depending on patient ration. The pods work for individual clinics and flow from one to the other to allow clinic expansion without modification.

The second floor accommodates more specialty clinics including dermatology, ophthalmology, outpatient surgery and the ORs, procedure and prep/recovery bays. Expansion space allows for the addition of another clinic such as mammography.

With so many specialties under one roof, MUSC wanted to avoid the old mass waiting room. Instead, patients are in decentralized waiting rooms.

The interior design celebrates the life of the low country with large graphic images of waterways, sports, and finishes that reflect the natural landscape and marsh. A concierge function and staff member create a more customer-focused approach to care.
