MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion
Awarded:
- AIA Charleston, Interior Architecture Merit Award, 2022
- Healthcare Design Showcase, 2019
For more than two years, a team of doctors and nurses, along with teamed architectural firms McMillan Pazdan Smith and Perkins + Will, met to help shape the design for the 7-story, 250-bed patient tower atop a 4-story podium. The new hospital replaces the existing 28-year-old MUSC Children’s Hospital on Ashley Avenue. It is one of only three in the nation where mothers and their sick newborns can stay in the same room during treatment and recovery. An entire team of physicians provides the necessary treatment or a patient who is having issues during pregnancy to provide more harmonized, comprehensive care. It also has an entire floor dedicated to cancer treatment for children and advancements in MUSC’s congenital heart program.
The project has specialized medical departments that include med/surg beds, critical care beds, labor and delivery, intensive care beds, nursery, surgery, emergency, diagnostic and imaging, ambulatory, testing, administration, and support.
The project team commissioned local art to provide delight, underscore the unique features of Charleston, and support wayfinding. For maximum impact within budget, the art is integral to architectural materials such as panelized theme walls, digitally printed wall protection, art photography in film at glass partitions, fused art glass, as well as framed pieces throughout.
