North Charleston Gymnasium
After the Charleston Naval Base closed, the City of North Charleston acquired off-base property on Casper Padgett Way in hopes of better serving community members and government agencies in the quickly growing area. Additional land was transferred to the City by the US Air Force. Having worked with McMillan Pazdan Smith on various projects through an IDC and wanting to generate revenue streams through the rapidly growing amateur sports market, the City of North Charleston commissioned our team to provide programming services, conceptual studies, and to serve as the Architect of Record for a new Design-Build 51,000 SF gymnasium.
As much of the acquired land has already been utilized by the Public Works Complex and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Government Complex, the new facility was strategically designed to maximize functional square footage on the remaining land parcel. The complex houses an arena with an NCAA-regulation sized, maple wood basketball court which can be divided into two, National Federation of State High School (NFHS) regulation-sized gyms with a capacity for 1,500 people. There is also a multipurpose gym with two NFHS regulation courts that can be used for basketball or volleyball and have a capacity of 600 people. The facility includes six team rooms, allowing for concurrent games, lobby concessions, and an upper floor multipurpose space that overlooks the courts on either side.
