One80 Place, Men’s Shelter

One80 Place (formerly Crisis Ministries), a non-profit organization in Charleston, SC providing food and shelter to families in need, chose McMillan Pazdan Smith to take advantage of a prominent Meeting Street site near the Ravenel Bridge in downtown Charleston.

Our firm chose to use the single-family typology in the surrounding context as a model for breaking down the scale of the institutional building. Differing roof lines and variations in the massing are contextually driven and bring the building down to a more residential scale. The use of materials helps distinguish between the residential shelter portion of the building and the administrative portion. A two story, central interior courtyard connects the two areas with a new dining hall. This open, airy space is filled with natural light and orients the building around a community space that connects residents and employees. The 29,000 SF building is designed as a catalyst for future redevelopment in the area.

The diverse program includes a dining hall/community room, commercial kitchen, men’s dormitories, health clinic spaces, social services offices, and administration offices.
