Porter-Gaud School, Upper School

Porter-Gaud, a distinguished private school in Charleston, SC, caters to students from first to twelfth grade. As part of the school’s masterplan, McMillan Pazdan Smith design a new 47,000 SF upper school. Acting as the campus’s “front door,” the upper school features 24 classrooms, administrative spaces, and a media center. The facility’s design pays homage to the school’s historic roots at the original Porter Military Academy site in downtown Charleston.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Colcock Hall, the design incorporates deep brick recesses, corbels, and clerestory elements. Modern entries and expansive glazing bring a contemporary touch, seamlessly connecting with existing campus structures. Situated near the senior parking lot, a vibrant and secure courtyard space is located between the Science and Technology Building, Wendell Center, and carpool lane.

In addition to design, McMillan Pazdan Smith played a pivotal role in the school’s capital campaign, leveraging renderings, fly-through animations, and project updates on the website. This ensured Porter-Gaud donors, students, and parents remained informed about the project’s progress.
