Prisma Health, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit
Patients who receive bone marrow transplants have highly compromised immune systems and must be kept safe from infection risks for the duration of their thirty to ninety day stay. Patients can now participate in activities beyond the confines of their rooms because the entire unit was designed with heightened infection control features.
Eliminating Infection Risks for Highly Sensitive Patients:
Each patient room is a Protective Environment (PE), a sealed space with positive air pressure and strenuous filtration requirements. A HEPA filtration system in conjuction with hard ceilings minimizes harmful airborne particulates. All water is filtered to 0.2 microns to minimize waterborne contaminants. The Bone Marrow Transplant unit is closed to traffic from other areas in the hospital. It is self-supporting via a dedicated med room, supply room, and clean/soiled utility rooms. All visitors to the unit must use the handwash station prior to entry.
Design Features Accommodate Extended Patient Stays:
Because these infection control measures occur throughout the Bone Marrow Transplant unit corridors and common areas, patients can leave the confines of their room to visit a nourishment station, the nurse station, and an activity area with a game table, exercise bike, and computer workstation. These give a much-needed change of scenery and opportunity for social interaction. Unlike a typical short-stay inpatient unit, these rooms also contain 42″ televisions, controllable lighting, and sleep sofas that convert to a dining area or twin beds.
