SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Residence Hall
The Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is South Carolina’s premier residential high school program serving the state’s most gifted and talented students. Located in the heart of downtown Greenville, the Governor’s School commissioned McMillan Pazdan Smith to design their new 14,000 SF, four-story, apartment-style J. Verne Smith Residence Hall to accommodate the school’s growing popularity and enrollment. Hall counselor apartments were also added to end units of an existing dorm and feature balconies overlooking the Reedy River and Falls Park.
The project also included approximately 3,500 SF of an additional student lounge, study, and activities pavilion as well as a complete renovation of lobby and administration areas. Challenges included a steep site with restricted access and the need to design and construct the addition while students were on campus.
