Self Regional Healthcare, Inpatient Pharmacy

McMillan Pazdan Smith designed a pharmacy upfit for an existing shell space to house picking, compounding, and dispensing functions, as well as clean rooms for IV and chemotherapy drugs. Its new location is centrally located for easier medication distribution throughout the hospital and accommodates a growing staff.

Lean design charrette accelerates the schedule:
Congestion and lack of space in the existing pharmacy created the potential for errors when receiving, sorting, logging, and distributing medications. To minimize the likelihood for mishaps in the new space, our team led a Lean design charrette after the Programming phase to understand medication workflows and processes. By the end of the charrette, the team reached consensus on a schematic layout to support these workflows, obtaining Schematic Design signoff.

Future flexibility for equipment replacement:
When a hood or piece of equipment needs to be replaced, it is critical to minimize the duration of the shutdown during the switchover so that patient medications are not delayed. To provide quick and easy access for equipment movement, wall panels are framed so that drywall sections can be opened and re-sealed with minimal re-framing.
