Spartanburg Day School, Athletic Complex
Physical education and athletic programs support an integral component of student co-curricular life at Spartanburg Day School, but new training facilities and equipment were needed to continue a commitment to athletics. The school hired McMillan Pazdan Smith to plan a renovation and addition of existing facilities that would enhance the athletic offerings and renew support space, while also providing a performance venue for school-wide events and rentable space for summer camps and activities.
The planning process identified the need to renovate 8,600 SF of existing gym support space and design 6,100 SF of additional support space to include a weight room, multi-purpose room, visiting team locker rooms, and an athletic director’s office. A new 14,000 SF gymnasium to seat 600 people includes a competition basketball court and full-length, cross-court practice courts along with motorized and retractable basketball goals and a new concourse for display cases.
Our project team achieved LEED Certification and used sustainable design features such as a highly reflective roof, high performance glass, and shading devices to reduce solar heat gain. Building systems and landscaping will further conserve energy and water consumption.
