Spartanburg High School, Gymnasium, Spartanburg School District 7
The gymnasium of Spartanburg High School had not been updated since it was constructed in 1959. A key part of the athletic program, McMillan Pazdan Smith designed a renovation to the 24,800 SF that will accommodate the needs of the high school and the athletic program.
The renovation includes a new NCAA court and provides seating for 1,700 spectators. State-of-the-art flooring was selected to provide less impact an athletes’ bodies. Telescopic bleachers on both sides of the court create an official visitors’ side.
Since the gymnasium also serves as the high school’s auditorium, the audio/visual system was an important part of the upgrades. A new A/V system was installed along with multiple screens in the gymnasium. One of the scoreboards serves a dual purpose with a descending screen.
The renovated lobby creates a café-like atmosphere as the main entry into the gym, adding new areas for concessions and ticket sales. Additionally, the lobby has been transformed into a multi-purpose room with the addition of a screen and projection system for meetings of up to 100 people.
