Spartanburg Methodist College, Moore Building Addition
Spartanburg Methodist College is a liberal arts college founded in 1911 as the first cooperative education program in the country and is now South Carolina’s only two-year, independent, residential college. To help promote on-campus life, the school hired McMillan Pazdan Smith to provide full design services for a new 4,000 SF addition to the Moore Athletics Activities Building and Gymnasium.
Taking an architecturally contemporary approach that still references the existing facility’s blue granite exterior, our design team selected a material palette of artisan stone and fiber cement siding. Large expanses of exterior glazing provide abundant daylighting in the fitness spaces, while exterior walls are minimal with a low 12-foot profile and a sloping, shingled roof. Signage featuring the school’s logo decorates both façades.
The new space includes treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, and strength training equipment. Modest, cost-effective interior finishes include gypsum board, carpet, laminated vinyl tile, rubber mat flooring, and acoustical ceiling tiles. An additional aerobic fitness classroom completes the space. The bathrooms include lockers and are finished with vinyl sheet flooring, partition stalls, and solid surface countertops.
The project was completed in December 2019.
