Sterling School (K-5), Greenville County Schools

Awarded: Association for Learning Environments (A4LE, formerly CEFPI), Excellence Award, Best In Class, 2009

Designed to serve as a new, flagship school for an economically challenged downtown community in Greenville, SC, the Sterling School provides education for children in grades K-5. A separate educational experience within the facility is the Charles Townes Gifted Center, designed for gifted and talented children grades 3-8, located as a separate wing, but sharing core facilities.

The two-story, 130,000 SF facility uses traditional materials such as brick and concrete masonry units within a modern context. A glass atrium and glass stair towers infuse daylighting into common areas of the facility. The floor plan segregates separate school classroom functions and discourages the overlap of different age groups, yet provides the fiscal savings of shared cafeteria, media center, and athletic spaces.
