With over 10,000 people moving to the Charleston metro area each year, there is an increasing need and a favorable economic climate to provide multifamily housing with easy access to the downtown Charleston peninsula and I-526. McMillan Pazdan Smith was commissioned in 2013 to design the exterior and unit plans for a new 174-unit apartment complex with a standalone clubhouse in the heart of West Ashley.
The 225,205 SF complex offers elevated finishes and amenities compared to those at nearby entry-level apartments. With wood exterior being a main feature in many surrounding apartment complexes, our design team sought to make The Ashley stand out by creating the illusion of metal materials. They accomplished this by mixing brick, white stucco, and copper-toned stucco. The metallic appearance was then enhanced by painting all of the wood on the individual apartment balconies a dark gray and adding metal building number signage. Our unique design also features a curved metal roof on each top floor end unit balcony. Due to its location in a coastal community, the five apartment buildings and the clubhouse were equipped with hurricane resistant windows and structurally designed for wind-loads.
Located just minutes from the Westwood Plaza Shopping Center, Crossroads Centre, and Village Square Shopping Center, The Ashley offers residents oversized one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans ranging from 722 SF to 1,644 SF. Residents are also able to enjoy the centrally located 5,560 SF clubhouse that was designed to include a leasing office, game room, self-service coffee bar, conference room, 24-hour fitness, and pet wash station. A gated, resort-style pool is located behind the clubhouse.
The Ashley opened in May 2017.
