The Mountain Community School (K-8)
The Mountain Community School is a K-8 charter school providing an alternative public education choice to families in Hendersonville, NC and surrounding areas. The school creates an educational environment where students are inspired to achieve academic excellence and discovery.
McMillan Pazdan Smith has been tasked with the expansion of the school by adding new classrooms and expanding their current resources in an entirely new building. The new facility and overall project will create a new campus on the existing site. This will allow the school to double their student body as well as provide them with additional educational, outdoor, and recreational space — including a regulation-size gymnasium, a media center that can serve the entire school, and a courtyard that serves multiple uses. The incorporation of nature and outdoor spaces is a huge part of the school’s mission, so the courtyard will be used for outdoor classrooms, independent study, and lunches. The expansion is expected to be around 17,000 SF and the plan is to separate the elementary school (K-5) from the middle school (6-8) with shared spaces, such as an assembly / gymnasium, library, and other support spaces. The project will be completed in phases, including an expansion and renovation of the existing building, while students remain on the existing site.
