University of South Carolina Beaufort, Hilton Head Gateway Campus
Awarded:
- Brick Industry Southeast Region, President’s Award, 2010
- AIA Columbia, Honor Award, 2008
As the first three buildings on a new satellite campus of a major state university, these buildings are situated according to a master plan previously developed by another firm. Located in a historic part of the South Carolina coast, the buildings attempt to establish a vocabulary for campus growth that is both rich in detail and flexible in expression. As requested by the university, these buildings all play upon a theme of traditional regional architecture, utilizing classical iconography and regionally selected brick, while incorporating contemporary detailing in response to the time in which they were constructed. The three buildings, while standing on their own, are intended to be considered in counterpoint to one another, as the gateway to campus.
