Vikings Athletic Complex, Spartanburg School District 7

Vikings Athletic Complex was born out of a need to balance their growing athletic department with limited space and money. McMillan Pazdan Smith presented Spartanburg School District 7 with a comprehensive plan. By resurfacing fields with state-of-the-art artificial turf, fields were available for more use than natural grass. The new fields allowed for football practice in the afternoon and soccer games in the evening. Physical education, intramural games, inter-scholastic sports, and the community take advantage of the new fields. The artificial turf also allowed for the addition of new sports such as lacrosse.

Utilizing sustainable design practices and despite financial constraints, more amenities were added to the Vikings Athletic Complex. McMillan Pazdan Smith designed six tennis courts, a viewing area for fans, multi-purpose fields, concessions, press box, wireless scoreboards, and a pedestrian avenue called Viking Way.
