Wofford College, Milliken Science Center
Awarded:
- Spartanburg City Planning Commission, Excellence in Design Award, 2001
- College Planning & Management Magazine, Outstanding Architecture & Design in Education Award, 2001
The Roger Milliken Science Center, a 64,000 SF addition and 40,000 SF renovation, seamlessly blends an existing 1959 structure with a new facility to create a home for the Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and Physics Departments. Nestled in the stately oaks of the campus, the new addition / renovation reinforces the college’s rich architectural heritage and its commitment to emerging technology.
Built to serve a variety of purposes, the design includes laboratories, classrooms, offices, a café, and flexible study areas for 200 students. The innovative use of emerging technology was a primary goal for the project. The entire building is connected to a fiber optic network for wireless technology and Bluetooth interfacing systems. The science classrooms include video and projection equipment, and each seat and/or workstation is equipped with data and voice connections.
The building façade marries the brick and stone finishes of the surrounding campus and is accentuated with a two-story stone clad great hall.
