Wofford College, Old Main, Leonard Auditorium
Awarded: School Planning & Management Magazine, Project of Distinction Award, 2007
Built in 1854, Old Main serves as the physical and historical center of the Wofford College campus. Every Wofford graduate has attended class in Old Main, resulting in increased interest by alumni for an overall restoration to enhance the mid-19th-century aesthetic with 21st-century technology.
Restoration initiatives included mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, an elevator, new windows, handicap accessible bathroom facilities, wooden floors, trim and period lighting, and period style casework. The entire facility received wiring technology for current technology teaching methods.
The stage of Leonard Auditorium, the showcase meeting space of Old Main, was extended to return it to its original configuration. New audio/visual equipment and lighting enhance the stage presentation. A coffered ceiling replicates the original design along with period style seating and historic detailing.
