Wofford College, Village Housing
Awarded: Builder’s Choice, Design and Planning Award, 2007
In an effort to increase enrollment without sacrificing students to off-campus housing, and to expand the variety of residential living choices on campus, Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC challenged our team to develop a new housing concept that would be attractive to discerning upperclassmen. After input from the Board, administrators, and students, a unique village concept was developed to create a neighborhood feel using residential housing plans of varying sizes.
To increase standardization and minimize cost, the interior floor plan repeats in multiples, from four bedrooms to 16, the same apartment-style design within each house. The design includes four private bedrooms, a dining and living room, two full bathrooms, and a kitchen. Each house is oriented to encourage social interaction and a sense of community. Amenities include exterior porches with rocking chairs and porch swings opening onto a park-like setting with connecting sidewalks, Shade trees, and lawn areas for grilling and recreation.
